Product Description
To achieve a spectacular cup of coffee there are essential steps that need to be taken. The water must be free of chlorine taste (hence the charcoal filter), the machine must be able to brew larger or smaller amounts successfully (this one "knows" to disperse hot water more slowly when the coffee ground amount is less). The coffee must be very hot (right around 192 Degrees F, like the brew from the MT500), and kept fresh, as in a double walled stainless steel carafe with a one way valve that keeps flavor and aroma in the coffee. Now it doesn't hurt if the machine itself is gorgeous either, or that it can output 10 cups of coffee in 8 minutes. Oh and one more thing: this is the only coffee maker in its class that has a stainless steel boiler so your coffee doesn't ever come in contact with aluminum. Normally this type of construction, and a 1200 watt heating element are found only on commercial grade appliances.

Amazon.com Review
Employing a stainless-steel vacuum carafe instead of a warming plate, this 1,200-watt coffeemaker brews up to ten 5-ounce cups in just 8 minutes for maximum flavor and aroma, and the carafe then keeps the coffee hot for 4 hours. The carafe prevents coffee from turning bitter, as it can when sitting on a warming plate, and doesn't have to remain with the machine for coffee to stay hot. To reduce calcification, Capresso's stainless-steel ThermoBlock system prevents water from contacting aluminum inside the machine. Other features: a digital, programmable, 24-hour clock/timer that makes it possible to have coffee ready in the morning; an automatic pause when the carafe is removed during the brewing process for a quick pour; a charcoal water filter to remove up to 83 percent of the chlorine in tap water; an electronic indicator to show when the water filter needs replacing; a setting for brewing three to five cups without diluting flavor and aroma; a permanent Gold Tone filter; automatic shutoff after brewing; an external water-level indicator; and concealed cord storage.

With a polished, extruded-aluminum body and plastic accents, the machine looks great on the counter. It measures 9-3/4 inches wide, 13-3/4 inches high, and 10 inches deep, weighs 7 pounds, and carries a one-year warranty against defects. --Fred Brack

5 out of 5 stars 5 Years of Perfect Coffee   August 21, 2010
Fritz Feldman (Chicago)
This thing cost a lot, but when replacing my Capresso Team coffeemaker, I wanted a serious coffeemaker and separate grinder. I read about it on "coffee enthusiast" forums and took the plunge. This thing has worked perfectly, everyday, for the last 5 years. It is fast and consistent. Great coffee. Used with a Breville Burr Grinder. The MT-500 keeps coffee hot for a few hours and fresh tasting for several so I can reheat if I choose. I use paper cone filters instead of the included gold filter...easier to dump than to clean in my opinion. If you are serious about your coffee, buy it.

4 out of 5 stars A fully competent coffeemaker   August 17, 2010

There are a whole lot of reviews on this - as usual, some informed and some...

I've had this model (or its prior equivalent) for over 2 years. BTW - I roast my own coffee and typically brew 2 pots/day and 3-5 different premium coffees/wk. Here's my take:

PLUS:
Excellent brewing temperature - this is the single most important feature in a coffee brewer - yep, you can do just as well with a Melita style cone and boiling the water (or not quite boiling it, to be precise) for a whole lot less money, but, this works beautifully.

Thermal carafe - friends don't let friends put their fresh-brewed coffee on a burner!

Brew rate - this system pumps the water at close to the maximum rate at which the coffee can properly steep.

Volume - the 4 mugs of coffee that last me through the morning (did I say good carafe!) when filled to the 8-cup mark.

In other words, you can do no better for getting the most out of the coffee that you are brewing.

BUT:

It is cheaply made - faux brushed aluminum plastic on the main body.

Filters are expensive, hard to find and slow flow rate as they age - just use a Brita!

Fill it to 10 cups on the body indicator at your own risk. If you want maximum volume, fill the carafe and use that to measure.

Learning curve - it takes time to have the feel for properly centering carafe on filter holder.

Not idiot-proof - I like to wait until the filter is near full of water to let the grounds fully wet before inserting the carafe. Doh - I walk away, get distracted and return to a BIG mess from the overflow! (Actually - not their fault - if I act like an idiot...)

Neutral:

Cleaning - use good cleaning chemicals and keep up with it. No, you can't get your hand in there, but if the carafe is so fouled that you need to, you've just been drinking bitter, nasty coffee due to poor maintenance. A standard dish brush works just fine - just let the cleaner soak the carafe for a few minutes after the brew cycle finishes.

In the end, since an alignment tab on the filter basket has broken off after 2+ years, I am deciding whether to replace the whole unit (resulting in a second carafe for entertaining), replace the part for $14 or upgrade to a sexy Scandinavian model for $150 more. The options are in likely order of decision.

Please save yourself the headache and avoid purchasing anything from Kismet. We ordered the Capresso coffee maker (170.00) and were unhappy with the product. We have been calling everyday for the last 15 days to speak with a representative to either replace or return the device. Not certain if the maker of Capresso product is aware of this or if they are one in the same with Kismet. Regardless, I will avoid both for now.

TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!

5 out of 5 stars Superior Coffeemaker: Capresso 440 MT 500   June 1, 2010
B. M. Frankel (Boston)
I pride myself on being a coffee afficionado. Nothing but the best beans for me. I needed to get a replacement coffeemaker after my Cuisinart 12 cup began to leak. Based on the reviews I read, I decided to go for a premium Capresso 440 MT 500. I was not disappointed. The controls are easy to use, and the coffee brews fast. Most importantly, the coffee tastes great--far superior than tasted through my Cuisinart brewer. The water head seems to cook the coffee more thoroughly than my previous coffee maker. Also, the thermal design keeps it warm and not bitter for three hours. The standard gold filter provided is a nice touch. The Capresso coffeemaker is definitely worth the money.

5 out of 5 stars Best Coffee Maker, Ever   May 21, 2010

I thought long and hard before spending this amount of money on a coffee maker, but once I did, I have not looked back. This coffee maker brews coffee and it is in my mug in 6 minutes. It is fast like a BUNN, but brews in a way that gets the best taste out of the coffee bean. I am not a coffee snob, but I do like a good, fast cup of coffee. The thermal carafe is a huge plus and keeps the coffee hot enough for me for about 3 hours. I also use the filters recommended for this maker, and I suggest that you use them as well as there is no scale buildup from using tap water to brew. Treat yourself, you'll be glad you did!
